Lined Seahorse

Meet the incredible Lined Seahorse, a true superstar of the shallow seas! These fascinating little animals instantly capture the hearts of visitors, young and old alike, with their gentle eyes, upright swimming posture, and calm, peaceful nature.


Unlike most other fish, lined seahorses don’t have scales instead, they are covered in a tough, bony armour that protects them from hungry predators. They are also famous for being devoted partners, often performing a beautiful, synchronized “morning dance” to greet each other every day. It is no wonder they are an absolute crowd favourite here at Deep Sea World. Get ready to dive into their world and discover what makes them so uniquely special!

When you visit, take a moment to look closely at their striking coats, which are covered in tiny, zebra like white lines and dark spots. You might notice they don’t have a regular tail fin. Instead, they use a clever, monkey like prehensile tail to curl around underwater plants so they don’t drift away in the current. Watch how they move—they use a tiny fin on their back to flutter gracefully through the water, while independently moving their eyes to look in two different directions at the exact same time!


Look Closely: Notice the fleshy, tree-branch-like growths on their heads called “cirri.” It is their secret weapon for blending perfectly into the surrounding seaweed!

The Lined Seahorse is a skilled carnivore with a massive appetite for tiny shrimp, plankton, and minute crustaceans. To catch a meal, they use an extraordinary hunting strategy called an ambush strike. They anchor themselves to a plant, stay perfectly still, and blend into the shadows. When an unsuspecting shrimp swims past, they use their elongated snout like a high-powered straw, creating a lightning-fast suction that snaps up the food in the blink of an eye!

In the wild, these amazing creatures call the vibrant coastal waters of the Western Atlantic home. They thrive in warm tropical reefs and shallow salt marshes, usually spending their time at depths of less than 30 meters. They love finding cosy shelter in thick beds of seagrass, mangrove roots, or floating sargassum weed, which keeps them safe from larger predators and gives them a perfect place to anchor themselves and rest.

While these creatures are resilient, their wild homes face challenges from habitat destruction and plastic pollution. The good news is that we can all help! By making simple choices, like reducing single-use plastics so they don’t wind up entangled in seagrass beds, we can protect the Lined Seahorse and safeguard our beautiful blue planet.
