The 4.5 million litre Northern Seas display is home to one of Europe’s largest collections of sharks, as well as hundreds of other fish including stingrays and conger eels.

Shark Encounter* allows absolute beginners to take the plunge and enjoy really close encounters with a huge selection of amazing marine life; including three-metre-long sharks, stingrays, tope, angel sharks and incredible shoals of shimmering fish.

Participants receive full instruction from our highly qualified diving team before entering the water for a truly life-changing experience!

Shark Encounters: FAQs

What are the general requirements?

You need to be over 16 years of age and you need to meet the medical requirements on the medical questionnaire.  Please note:  If you answer ‘YES’ to any of the questions on the medical form, you will require a doctors permission to dive.  If all of your answers are ‘NO’, please just come along – you will fill out a form when you get to the aquarium on the day of your dive.

Is it safe?

Our tank is a safe environment to dive in and our team are fully qualified PADI dive instructors.

Can I feed the sharks?

No, members of the public cannot feed our sharks.  Our sharks are fed by our divers on Saturdays and Wednesdays.

Can I fly after I dive?

PADI recommends that you wait 12 hours after your dive before you fly.

How do I get there?

Deep Sea World is located 20 minutes from Edinburgh over the Forth Road Bridge just off Junction 1 of the M90.  There is free on-site parking.  By public transport, there are regular train services from Edinburgh Waverley and Haymarket stations to North Queensferry on the Fife Circle Line.  Our location is clearly signposted and just a short walk from North Queensferry station.

Am I in a cage?

No, you are not in a cage.  You are in amongst the fish and sharks accompanied by our dive instructors.

When can I dive?

Our Shark Encounters are run every weekend at 3 different time slots – 11am, 1.30pm and 3.30pm.  You must pre-book your dive by calling 01383 411880.  Dive sessions are subject to availability.

How long does the course last? The course is approximately 2 hours in length.  This includes training, briefing and a 15 – 20 minute dive.

What do I need to wear?

At Deep Sea World we dive in dry suits and SCUBA gear.  Please bring a change of warm clothes with you on the day of your dive to wear under your dry suit.  Tracksuit bottoms, long sleeved t-shirts and warm socks are perfect.

Can my friends watch me dive?

Yes, included in the price are 2 spectators.  You can also have additional spectators at a reduced rate.  Your spectators can watch your dive from the viewing tunnel.

Can I take a camera into the tank?

No sorry, you cannot take a camera into the tank.

What are the height and weight restrictions?

Min height: 5ft Max height: 6ft 4inch

Max weight: 18 stone

Chest size: 48 inch
