JAWS - see the world's most terrifying predators. Now open at Deep Sea World

Conservation

Scotland’s seas are home to an incredible 44,000 species, including the world’s second largest fish – the basking shark and around 24 species of whales and dolphins. Scotland seas are also hugely important for scotland’s economy, supporting fisheries, shipping, ports, energy production and tourism. However, the oceans resources are becoming increasingly stretched as over fishing, pollution and habitat destruction take their toll. There are many conservation groups fighting to safeguard the future of all marine species. Deep Sea World is actively involved and participates in the following programmes:

Green Tourism

Green Tourism Logo

Deep Sea World has always endeavoured to promote responsible behaviour towards the environment mainly through education but over the last four to five years we have been looking much more closely at how we as a business, were able to reduce the effects we have on it.

We have now introduced many comprehensive policies and procedures and this has now become an integral part of our staff training programme.  In addition we have extended our education programmes to include eco –schools and have forged new links with the community.

At Deep Sea World we are committed to providing a good high quality of service, whilst minimising the environmental impact of our activities.

A symbol of our commitment is our membership of Visit Scotland’s Green Tourism Business Scheme.  This scheme provides independent accreditation and encouragement for tourism businesses to reduce the environmental impact of their activities.

By encouraging sustainable practices it ensures the continued enjoyment of the environment of Scotland for future generations.

Through the membership of the Green Tourism Business Scheme we have committed to:

  • Adhering to good environmental practices in all our business activities
  • Ensuring that the business meets the minimum requirements set by environmental law and fulfils its legal Duty of Care requirements for waste disposal
  • Achieves sustainable environmental improvement
  • Continuously reducing polluting activities

We are proud to have been recently accredited with a GOLD award for excellence in environmental practice

We have now entered into partnership with Fife Council and a recycling centre will be opening soon in the Deep Sea World carpark. This will be open to the public during business hours only and will have recycling bins for plastic bottles, glass bottles – clear glass, brown glass and green glass as well as a recycling bin for aluminium. Within Deep Sea World we will have bins for cardboard and also a can crusher for public use within our café.

We are happy to have entered into this new collaboration with Fife Council and I am sure that the new recycle centre will prove to be an invaluable asset to all within the North Queensferry community.

Angel Shark Breeding Project

Angel Shark Photo

Deep Sea World has just confirmed that its female Angel Shark – on loan from Underwater World, Hastings - is pregnant. This is a first for this species in the captive environment. It represents an important step in our understanding of this increasingly rare shark species found within European waters.

Coral Farming Conservation

Coral Farming Photo

We aim to raise awareness of the reef destruction to coral reefs that is occurring around the world through use of a living coral display. Deep Sea World is actively growing coral fragments by farming the corals on display to supply the hobby trade so reducing the impact on the wild supplies.

Project Seahorse

Project seahorse aids to raise awareness of this organisation which works on the conservation of all species of seahorses around the world.

Beach Cleaning Events

Deep Sea World staff organise and participate in the Marine Conservation Society’s annual beach cleaning events of three beaches on the shores of the Firth of Forth. The data collected by these beach cleans is compiled into a national survey to determine the origin of the litter to better understand how to prevent coastal pollution.
